Charlwood provide an end of season demonstration from the top of the league

So, after all the excitement of the last few weeks and really strong consistent performances since lockdown release it was a home game for the final game of the season and what would no doubt be the sternest of tests. Only beaten once and top of the league – it could only be Charlwood.

The Cobras had played Charlwood teams twice this season losing 2-4 and 2-5 - in one game where they were low on players however in both they had been outplayed. The boys were all excited by the challenge and although we had a couple of enforced changes enthusiasm remained high.

A good start was imperative, and could the Vipers catch Charlwood cold from the off? The question was answered in the 1st minute – an emphatic no!!!! My pencil was burning from the off as the blur of yellow shirts swarmed all over us from the start – George was into instant action and was valiant in his defiance. The cry from the Loxwood mass was that muscle, “getting your foot in” and “route 1” was likely the only way out of this – playing through the Charlwood midfield was not an option. The good news was that in Cam and Ben we had “men boys” on the pitch who with their stature could help stem the flow.

It was only the 5th minute though when Charlwood made the breakthrough – from a corner. Ben headed clear but Charlwood were on it and the ball was struck sweetly. Through the crowded box for 1-0. The restart and it continued. Charlwood immediately hit the bar and had a looping shot sail wide.

The Vipers held them out for another 9 minutes but it was once again a corner that saw an attacker left loose and capitalising with a stooping heading from a low whipped in corner on the near post. 0-2.

Although a win was a stretch could the lads rally and stem the flow? Well yes, sort of…… George went route 1 and it landed at William, he broke free and rounded the keeper – was it to be a repeat of that cup final goal? – not quite. With a touch a little heavy it bobbled past the post, but a chink had been shown. Cue the Rocky theme tune – was this the turning point? I could hear Rocky in the corner saying, “I can see of three of them Micky” and Micky screaming back “Just hit the one in the middle…”. Tackles were flying in – Cody was strong, Cam was strong, Fin was strong, Jenko playing sensible football all game and Sebby was showing why he is the most improved player in the 2nd half of the season. Charlwood scored. 18th minute. 0-3.

The half ended with this score line. Cam floated in a long range free-kick. Charlwood were tricky, the Vipers had chances on the break. Having Jody available would have been an interesting challenge for this defence (not withstanding Raff and Charlie also).
The 2nd half wasn’t quite as one-way in terms of play. For the record Charlwood scored 2 really quick goals in the 45th and 47th minute that killed the tie. They had one right at the end to complete a 0-6 victory which while deserved may have been a little harsh on the Vipers who probably didn’t deserve to concede a 6th and on balance deserved one for themselves. They had troubled the Charlwood defence at times who I suspect don’t normnally have any defending to do :!

That said congratulations Charlwood. Worthy league winners and setting the standard. Whenever we play them, it is a fair, polite and respectful game. We wish them luck next season!

Notable in this half were Georges heroics including a fabulous double save – that coupled with the one in the final proving we really do have an Inspector Gadget in goal at times. Also notable was Jenko really taking no prisoners, Sebby bombing up the left from the left – have we found a new Gareth Bale? Cam very strong in midfield and having a clearance off the line. It was also very heartening to see Ben slip into midfield. He had already played his heart out for the Cobras this same morning but his desire to fight for the cause never wavered. William decided a Zindane step-over was the order of the day and executed beautifully and even Coach Paul got in on the act with a lovely mid-air take down from the sideline. And not to forget Sarah who on deciding to retrieve the ball from distance now realised it had to be passed back over some length in front of a very supportive crowd “oooooooooo, you’re good ahhhhhhhhh”

Although Sam did have a quieter game, he did win a penalty – it was just that “Collina the Enforcer” in the middle did not spot it – post match he insists that we were on the wrong side (of the pitch) and it was a great tackle. From where we were standing there was only one individual on the “wrong side” and that was Vinny J

The Vipers finished the season a more than respectable 3rd and an exciting foundation for next season – easily our best team performance of the year and nothing but positives for this well drilled and enthusiastic pool of players.
It would amiss to finish this report without a mention of Harry Smith. Also shattered from the Cobra game he was out of energy but as we have known for years this wouldn’t put him down and he joined the game at the end for a cameo performance that would be his last ever at U12s before he steps down a year back to his own age group.

What to say? Harry Smith has been a pleasure to watch develop. Since age 5 he has played up with us and represented both teams. So many games where he has doggedly annoyed defences and players 3 times his size and nicked goals with his speed, guile and desire. This culminated in his hat-trick in the recent semi-final that put us on the path to glory.

I think in the time I have watched this group he is the one player that I have heard opposing supporters/parents say multiple times “who the hell is that kid?” … “he plays everywhere” ….”where does he get the energy?” …… “and how do you stop him”.  And always with a smile… in the rain, snow and sun. He lives for football. Our own Messi. Good luck Harry S in the U12s next year – they are lucky to have you and you will smash it....

His last match and and an early one below.....

A strong Cobra performance gives Andy Leete the best leaving present

After a run of good performances, but disappointing results, the Cobras of Loxwood arrived at the hallowed turf of Great Common, keen to secure the victory they so deserved. Since it all came down to this game; both the last of the season, and the last under the tutelage of coach Andy Leete (after more than 4 years of involvement at the club), the brave boys in white were particularly motivated - and it showed, from the moment the first whistle blew.

The game began with Angus in goal, a back line of Luc, Kelsey and Willem; a midfield of Sylvester, Dan, Ben and Harry, with Oscar playing up front. Instructions from the manager were to press the opposition into their half, and to communicate positively with each other - and boy did they listen!

The Griffins were up against it, as the Cobras kept much of the football out of their defensive third with a commitment to win the ball and make challenges with conviction. The Cobras worked well in midfield; Sylvester making some great runs up the wing and Harry and Ben linking up well in the centre, both getting forward into goal scoring positions. However, it took a perfect through ball from Luc to impact the scoreboard. Ben, running onto the pass, slotted the ball into the corner of the net. 1-0 Cobras.

Further opportunities then came, with Albury visibly rattled. An unfortunate miss-hit from an Albury defender finding its way over their keeper and into the back of the net, 2-0 Cobras, and the half time whistle went.

In the second half, with Marco now on, securing things at the back, Albury began to force their way back into the game, a flurry of brilliant stops from new keeper Willem kept the sheet clean. The Cobras continued to play positively; Angus, now in the outfield made some great runs up the wing and serviced the forward players with perfect crosses and corners. Albury attacking efforts began to dry up, thanks to strength at the back from Kelsey and some better engagement from Dan. Oscar continued to provide a constant threat on the counter attack and Luc tracking the Albury forwards like a heat-seeking missile.

Altogether the most assured performance of the season, and a well-deserved 2-0 victory.

Parents player award went the excellent Kelsey for another outstanding defensive display (just needs to be more gentle with his crosses when he's pressing higher up the pitch!), and coaches award went jointly to two clean-sheet-keepers, Angus and Willem, who both combined confident shot-stopping with clear calling and positive leadership from the back.

Great heart from the boys to work so hard as a team, making coach Andy proud-as-punch in the process.

A big thank you from everyone connected to the U12s who have been honoured to have Andy and Angus with us over the years..... our teams would never have developed without your unselfish commitment, dedication and expertise!

Ewhurst sneak past in tight double header

15/5/2021

Updated Match Report from Coach Andy now added.....

Unfazed by their opponents previous week's Cup exploits, the Cobras set about Ewhurst with amazing energy and enthusiasm. Harry S and Ben taking the game by the scruff of the neck and pulling the midfield strings.

Lovely movement off the ball and neat confident passing early on enabled the Cobras to create the best of the chances with Ben striking the crossbar with a rising rasping shot and Sam being denied by some brave keeping. Ewhurst only rarely threatening the Cobras goal due to defensive heroics from Kelsey, Fin, Marco and an ever alert Barney.

The Cobras continued to press in the 2nd half with chances created from well rehearsed corner set pieces thanks to excellent distribution from Angus, Kelsey, Willem and Sam but a resolute Ewhurst stood firm. Further Cobras chances came and went without being converted,  with time nearly up a rare defensive lapse in dealing with a loose ball enabled Ewhurst to sneak in at the back post to slide in a winner to the despair of the home crowd.

A harsh result for the Cobras based on effort and determination, not to get something for their much improved display, which was probably their best performance since returning from the lock down break.

Game 1: Cobras 0 Ewhurst 1
Game 2: Cobras 0 Ewhurst 2

I wasn't on time to see the first game so cannot comment although both sets of supporters reported that the Cobras had dominated the game and were unlucky to lose to Ewhurst who took their chance.

Watching game 2 I thought the effort was excellent and the organisation good. Players in their positions and holding them well. Ben extremely strong in midfield, Harry danger wherever and whoever he plays for and Slyvester very assured were the highlights noted. Sam was a constant danger and may have had more success if he released the ball earlier towards goal just to give teammates the opportunity to gamble on the rebound as well as giving their keeper something to think about.

The difference in the end was that the Ewhurst players gave more passing options with their movement off the ball to whoever had possession. The boys didn't tire, didn't give in and really were unlucky to not get a goal that their endevours deserved.

Well done lads! Its a while since I have seen a Cobras game and there is tons of progress!

A day at a neutral ground, rosettes in hand, flags at the ready, sleepless nights, a bundle of nerves… it meant one thing…..It’s a Cup Final.

We (if you are are as old as me) remember this. The only game live on TV, a town dressed in the team colours, a Saint & Greavsie early morning start and Bob Wilson interviewing the players on a sun filled bus as it made its way through the throng of fans making their way to the twin towers.

And it was these memories in the background that we made our way in various vehicles to the hallowed turf of Horsley FC. Charlie stepped out of the car full of a pre-match special diet (an Aero supersize Peppermint chocolate bar) and with the Rocky IV theme tune ringing in his ears – perfect preparation…

“Two worlds collide
Rival nations
It's a primitive clash
Venting years of frustrations
Bravely we hope
Against all hope
There is so much at stake
Seems our freedom's up
Against the ropes
Does the crowd understand?”

Nervous tension as the supporting crowd gathered and nervous excitement as the boys got themselves together.

A move pitch side unveiled excited parents, sisters, brothers, and grandparents as a supporting cast. The famous Loxwood roar was on tour and it would be felt.

Conditions were windy, very windy. The rain from earlier in the day had abated but threatened. A big factor in the clouds overhead.

A well-managed warm-up, directions and encouragement was served, and Captain Cam was called to the centre for the toss of the coin. Coin toss lost and the Sea Lions elected to play the first half towards downhill and with the wind behind them on pitch 4. An interesting decision, and probably right turned around the other way – would a strong advantage in the 1st half serve them well?

The last game between these two was only 3 weeks ago. A 2-0 win to the team from Goldsworth who had defended brilliantly, kept out the Viper attack and taken their chances well!
For once I won’t detail everything… if I miss anyone I apologise….. (I also lost my 1st half notes!)

The game started with Loxwood strong. Against the wind and causing danger. William in particular was dangerous. It was only five minutes though before Goldsworth were taking advantage of that swirling wind and the conditions. Wave after wave……

Harry J his normal dependable and reliable self, Fin playing smart at left back but maybe our new signing “New” Sebby at right-back really showing his newfound talent – where has this defending Cafu/Neville/Phil Neal (you take your pick) come from since lockdown return?

There really was no pattern in midfield and both teams struggled to get their foot on the ball. When Loxwood did break Jody was dangerous with his blistering speed but in the conditions, it was tough to keep momentum.

I won’t go through the rotation of subs throughout but noted that the coach played this well. Resting who needed to be rested at the right time and trying to mix it up to create variety.

Goldsworth had a number of corners and even from the far end it was obvious that we these were troublesome. Finally, one from the bottom right was whipped in at speed in the 14th minute, it bent wickedly and brave George got his hands to it – unfortunately he pushed the ball into his own net. (sorry George). 1-0 Goldsworth which on the balance of play at this time was deserved.

“Come on Loxwood!!!”, “Heads-up lads” were the various cries. And how they responded. Straight from kick-off the adrenalin was pumping, and spirits had not died. It finally came together. Charlie held the ball in midfield and looked up. A beautifully played through ball cut the defence apart but all the work was still to be done. William ran onto it as the opposing keeper advanced, but William was around him. He was pushed wide with an open goal but kept his head to slot it home. Only 4 minutes from going down it was now 1-1.

An incredible moment followed. Although the author could potentially be accused of bias, the video below says everything. Goldsworth on the back foot, the keeper off his line and following intense pressure from Jody and William it landed at Charlies feet who it from a long way out…. “just look at his face, look at his face….”… Wasn’t to be, although Charlie is crowned “World Crossbar challenge champion” without any question.

The Smiths and were on. Slotting into their positions with aplomb. Harry in particular being a menace. However, it was Cody as the substitution in defence that probably assisted the most. Goldsworth were dangerous throughout this period but brilliant tracking by Sam and Cam to support the back three kept them out.

All they had to do was get to half-time at 1-1. A first half draw and the conditions would favour the Vipers. Could they make it? Yes! They did! 1-1 at half-time and both teams happy with how they had played in that first half.

Half-time came, an encouraging team talk from Coach Paul and Enforcer Vinny but most importantly a whole bag of wine gums administered by Tess.

The rain started as the 2nd half kicked off – blowing sideways. A lot of concern that the expected advantage of playing behind the wind would be negated. Thankfully though it didn’t last.

The 2nd was being played in a similar fashion to how the whole of the game had been played so far. Both teams working diligently but the conditions working against them. This resulted in a pattern where the game had no pattern. It also meant that any ball played forward to Jody was giving him too much to do. He played well throughout, with a few 1:1s but was denied by the wind, good goalkeeping or the linesmans offside flag (right decisions from what I witnessed at that end).

A feature of the second half was “Captain Cam”’s commandment in midfield. He asserted his physical presence on the game and was mopping up back to front. His partnership in midfield with Charlie playing in a more attacking role has worked well. He is also a commander on the pitch. At times of little communication, it isn’t left to George on his own anymore and Cam gees them up but also has an intelligent side word with players who have missed an attempt or heads are dropping. Great leadership that William Wallace would even raise his axe to!

The author found the 2nd half a blur but looking through my notes I can confirm that Harry Smith continued to cause trouble, providing chances more often than not for others. Cam had a number of multiple attempts and Sebby remained unflappable.

The ref had blown for multiple free-kicks in the game. The boys were playing smart, floating them high towards the keeper and following in to create trouble. A resulting corner created mayhem in the 6-yard box and in the 44th minute and Jody had the vital touch – the boys back the in lead at 2-1.

Although it was felt that this was the point of the game that had made the difference it wasn’t. George had previously dealt with a lot of danger in the first half quite comfortably, but it was a Goldsworth corner that bought the game changer (in my mind). A dangerous corner bobbled out of the area and was well struck by our opposition. George dived to his left outstretched and pushed it away – made to look effortless. Goldsworth pushed on, Sebby cleared off the line. Cam picked it up to bring it out. Goldsworth shot, impeded by an Oscar challenge – it went wide. It was now starting to feel like it wasn’t to be their day. Gordon Banks save vs the Pele header in 1970? Forget it! This is the save that I will remember to my grave.

A brilliant piece of video editing by Mrs.Ramsay follows (sound on required).....

The game remained patchy but it didn’t feel like anyone was going to take control. The risk was that with no extra-time that Goldsworth would nick one as the Loxwood fans nerves stretched onto the pitch. It was all put to bed before that though. With just over 2 minutes left a looping free-kick from Charlie on the half-way line span high, hit the keeper and rolled up over him backwards towards to the goal. Did it go over line? It didn’t really matter as William watched it come down and he knocked it into the back of the net to make sure, he did however award it to Charlie stating it was over the line. 3-1 and into the last minute. The final whistle was a very sweet sound.

As I said, a hard report to write. No poor performance, every player played their part in a team performance as they have done in the lead up to this final in what has been a difficult season. The Vipers performances post-lockdown have without doubt been something we have never witnessed before from this group.

Credit to Goldsworth who never gave up, played fairly and were gracious. Whenever we have played them it has been the best of grassroots football. The referee also played his part in being clear in his decisions and instruction. He also made it clear that “throw-in” lessons are certainly required for the Vipers.

This has been a long-time coming. 6 years. Today was a team effort, but not just any team effort – an extended team effort. Coaches Paul and Andy Leete who have nutured and developed these players. Vinny, Simon Gwilliam, Marco (I probably missed someone) taking coaching. Lines being marked out early, ground set-up by Steve Smith, linesman volunteers, even people referring when required. Everyone involved for the past 6 years should be proud. The first of many we hope!!!!

The cup is picked up......

Last word to “lad mountain Captain Cam” and his victorious team mates….. brilliant lads, just brilliant........

Vipers in 7th Heaven

Vipers vs Goldsworth Park Rangers Stags

After the excitement of last week’s excellent semi-final display it was back to regular business as the Vipers made the now familiar journey to Goldsworth Park to face the Stags in a double header league game.

A cunning ploy was foiled right at the start as it discovered at the line-up for kick-off that Coach Paul had sneaked a 10th player onto the field of play and Marco was swiftly removed – nice try Coach Paul!

The game had a steady start although this author proved why he is better at reporting than coaching when he screamed at George to use his hands and pick the ball up from a Jenko back pass – luckily George “The Cat” knows the rules of football better and proved that he has studied Law 12, Section 2 which states “The back-pass rule states that a goalkeeper is forbidden to handle the ball when passed to them by a team-mate”. Phew! Good for George.

The Vipers had a steady start and the opening exchanges were notable for Williams strong corners, a looping effort from Charlie, a great run from Jody, and dependable Jenko displaying his normal self-assurance in the centre of defence. It was clear from the start though Sebby was on it and in what was to be a feature throughout both games he played a lot of sensible balls with the masses within the traveling fan contingent in agreement that this was his best performance ever.

The Stags were in this and a very dangerous corner that was whipped was headed by Jenko who nearly score own goal of the year. The lads looked strong though. Fin was letting little past him, William was ferreting around creating a nuisance of himself and Cameron was dominating in midfield winning every 50/50 ball in his normal fearless manner that has become a feature of his game. Charlie was throwing his weight around also and was likened to a “bumper car” by some!

Marco and Cody came on and the momentum continued. Cody was playing in a more advanced position that normal and put Jody through who narrowly missed.

Notable in this part of the game was the tippy tappy football on the field and also off it – as the ball was played onto the left wing and Marco demonstrated all his Italian finesse with some lovely one touch ball control. Could we squeeze him into an under-12 shirt and get him on? Maybe not!

As the half (1st game) drew to a close George released the ball quickly in a route 1 attempt. Their keeper cleared but from midfield Charlie met it strongly with his head and it fell into the path of an advancing Jody. A beautiful cross field ball from Jody landed at the feet of Sam who buried it with aplomb leaving the Stags keeper no chance. A beautiful move, one to savor. A great team goal.

The half wasn’t completed, and Coach Paul asked the Vipers to see this out this however it was the Stags who finished the the stronger and it took a great reaction save from George to keep the score at 0-1. The ref blew for half-time and game one was concluded at 0-1 to the Vipers.

Picture
A tactical team talk by Coach Paul and Vinny the Enforcer took place at half-time and the boys were back on the pitch for the 2nd half (2nd game). Could they continue where they left off? Well they weren’t going to get away with anything else as just 30 seconds into the half Coach Paul was heard to scream…”DO NOT JOG!!!!!”. In case there is any doubt in this readership I believe he was asking them not to jog.

And then a rare event. Was it to be on the pitch? What possibly could be happening? It was Steve Smith. He offered a round of teas and coffees threatening a plague of mothballs as he went to pay :-) - only joking! Much appreciated Steve and Jeremy!

Back to the game. The half started strong. A rare corner delivered by Jody was beautifully placed and flashed across Charlies head and just wide. Charlie then went on a surging run, thundered a shot, off the underside of the crossbar, back down (did it cross the line?) bounced off the inside of the path but no goal line technology needed as Cody charged in a buried it into the back of the net. 0-1

Three minutes later Charlie was at it again, a speculative long shot, an unfortunate keeper mistake and it was 0-2. Muted celebration from the lads as they were respectful of the unfortunate keeper.

Two minutes later – a Charlie rocket. No doubt about that one - 0-3. Again, muted celebration. Discussion on the sidelines on whether he needed to get back on his X-Box, play FIFA 21 and re-learn some moves!

And then just three minutes later the debate on the first goal no longer mattered as Charlie score again to make it. 0-4 and complete his hat-trick. At this point he was taken off for a well- earned rest (and probably a rest for the terrorised Stags defence at this point).

It made little difference to be honest. Jody picked up again and provided another assist (he had had a few at this point) and delivered a beautiful cross to Cody who scored his second of the day in his new advanced position. 0-5

With the Vipers now completely in control every single player on the field were showing their confidence. Sam had been dependable throughout and delivered an excellent corner (every player seems to be able to take them today!), Cameron continued to dominate and Jenko had a lovely well-timed challenge.

The last word was left to Charlie though who right at the death and having returned to the field of play and thundered in his 4th to finish the second game 0-6.

It would be wrong to think this was all one-way traffic. The Stags had played their part and to be fair the score line didn’t reflect the balance of play and it was case of the Vipers simply nailing most of their chances in the 2nd half.

Another clean sheet! Thirteen goals scored since we last conceded and most pleasing that every player on the pitch remained disciplined, stuck to the task in hand and played with the right temperament. Brilliant preparation for the final next week and a great confidence builder.

Wrap them in cotton wool folks – and try to get some sleep between now and next Saturday.

Player of the day went to Sebby – as previously noted he had had his best performance ever in that left back role – great work Sebby!

Final word goes to the goalscorers Charlie, Cody, Coach Paul and George “Poncherello”…..

I don’t like semi-finals. I support Tottenham….

1993 vs Arsenal, 1995 vs Everton, 1999 vs Newcastle, 2001 vs Arsenal, 2010 vs Portsmouth, 2012 vs Chelsea, 2017 vs Chelsea, 2018 vs Man United… that’s 8! Yes, you read correctly 8 semi-final defeats in a row. An FA Cup record L

So, it was with some trepidation that I awoke to the bright Sussex sunshine this morning contemplating the semi-final of the Vipers vs Albury Griffins.

The ground looked splendid. A quick check in the executive boxes of the West Stand found Emily Smith very excited and ready to go. Questioned on how her brothers might play this morning our resident pundit stated, “I think they will both do as well as each other”.

A quick warm-up for the lads, a rousing team talk and then the magnificent sight of “Commander Cameron” on the field reading specific tactical instruction out to Charlie – watch your backs Paul and Vinny!

Picture
The referee arrived and immediately smelling salts were required as the female contingent went weak at knees – at least it made a change from the weekly event of them all batting their eyelids at Steve Smith! He was a very organised referee and as this was a semi-final Keanu Reeves lined up both teams and walked them out onto the pitch – all that was missing what the Champions League theme tune. Or the noise of a bus backing up with has been reported to be the theme tune of the European Super League!

The whistle blew, the game commenced, George bellowed encouragement and a very lively encounter started with a lot of activity right from the off. The suspicion was that this level of effort couldn’t be sustained without Coach Paul having a lively substitution strategy. The level of effort was the feature of the game.

Right from the off the Vipers looked dangerous and at the task in hand very quickly. Cam immediately started dominating the midfield using his size advantage, getting his foot on the ball and providing some very clever attacking passing play. William and Raff up front were dangerous from the start also – particularly impressive was the pressing from Raff who was playing the lone striker in the middle as our talisman Jody was missing. This pressing was causing Albury to clear the ball at haste and stifling any rhythm they were trying to get into their game.

George was very safe at the back and looked in a comfortable mood – although his insistence to use his feet rather than hands had Coach Pauls hands in his head at times. Also pleasing and an early feature was the no-nonsense defending at the back. We come to expect that from Harry J but Sebby and Fin were instrumental in this back 3 throughout the game playing the simple balls to dispel danger when it arose.

Albury were dangerous at this point in the game. A mazey run from their left winger flashed the ball across goal, foxed George and as we all had our hearts in our mouths Cam cleared off the line. The balance of play was shifting though, and the Vipers were looking increasingly dangerous in attack. William had a number of corners, all delivered very well, one in particular flashing across the goal at speed that just needed the smallest of flicks to create a real problem.

Harry and Oscar entered the frame from the subs bench after about 20 mins and this new energy on the field from the pair of them changed the dynamic immediately. Harry continued straight from where he left off last week and decided to play his own separate game of football vs Albury. He maneuvered himself into a dangerous position that resulted in an illegal barge off the ball. Not for the first in the game George Clooney in the middle of the pitch let play go before pulling it back citing no advantage, explained his decision and pulled play for a Loxwood free-kick. Excellent refereeing. The resulting free-kick from Cam was well taken but a brave Albury wall stood firm.

An Albury corner was handled by the trusty back 3 and released to Oscar. With huge energy he ran the length of the pitch and although brilliant play you sensed if it was released that could have been the chance. It wouldn’t be long though…..

The breakthrough came in the 28th minute. Harry again worked himself into space in a fairly congested penalty box and forced a save from the Albury keeper – he followed up and his persistence paid off as the keeper struggled to hold it and Harry poked it past him for 1-0.

Now, we cried, it was time to “keep it simple”. Batten down the hatches and get to half-time at 1-0 and refresh. The Vipers however had other ideas. They pressed hard and there was a barrage of 3 or 4 chances – it was happening so fast it remains undocumented! They say fortune favours the brave and it was a bit of fortune that bought the second goal. William again placing a beautiful cross at speed, this one low to the ground, which clipped an unfortunate Albury outstretched leg and looped over their stranded keeper who really couldn’t do anything about it. Respect shown by the parent contingent who refrained a celebration of note.

Brad Pitt restarted the game and Albury attacked demonstrating that they were still in this but the human stallion then blew the whistle for half-time and Loxwood went in 2-0 up.
Vinny took the majority of the half-time talk, pointing out his observations and areas for the lads to improve and see this home. Refreshments onboard and the second half commenced.

The boys came out once again with a very strong start. An initial cross from the right by Harry that Raff couldn’t quite meet. Albury attacked, but this was repelled by Sebby and Harry J.  George gained control and our trusty keeper released the ball quickly to provide a route one chance for Harry S that just skimmed past the post.

A short time after though our man mountain Cam had to come off. Oh no! An injury! Was it a hamstring? Was it a metatarsal? A detailed examination determined that he had drunk too much Lucozade at half-time and his tummy hurt! Probably quite good for Cam that Vinny Jones is not our coach J

The front three (Charlie playing a little more advanced now) were starting to cause havoc. Charlie hit the side netting after bursting through. Moments later a cross from Charlie arrived to Raff who placed it to Harry who blasted over. Would the Vipers regret these missed opportunities?

This question was answered in part in the 34th minute. A clearance by the keeper resulted in a very strong directed header in midfield from Charlie that landed in the path of Harry. With the keeper off his line Harry didn’t hesitate and beautifully floated it over his head into the bottom corner for 3-0.

The Vipers had control now but it wasn’t all one way, defending still had to be done as Albury continued to threaten. Harry typified the energy of all the lads when a attacking corner was cleared by Albury who switched to attack. This was broken down though as Harry S was back tracking in a defensive midfield rear guard action.

The Vipers pressure was wound up and the Albury keeper was doing well. He bravely dived at Charlies feet and repelled a stinger from Raff in a 1:1. It took a really sublime piece of skill from William Fielden to get the 4th a put the result beyond doubt (even with 18 mins to go). With the ball at his feet he took one look up and delicately chipped the ball over the heads of the Albury defence for it to land in slow motion in the bottom left-hand corner for 4-0.

Another Albury corner was dealt with and with Cam back on the pitch he raced forward up the left. He worked himself into a lovely position but got caught between a decision to shoot or cross and the ball floated across the goal just past the far-left post.

There were a number of Loxwood corners in this period of the game, one of which resulted in a lovely half volley from Cam just flashing wide. In the middle of the field Harry J showed a sublime piece of skill by twisting and turning two players and walking away with the ball while the opposition wondered where the ball had gone.

Albury heads were down a little (understandably) and in the 52nd minute they didn’t deal with a ball in defence that Harry S leapt on to walk the ball into the net for 5-0. A hat-trick for Harry S!

With the hat-trick completed Coach Paul substituted both Harry S and Oscar who both came off the field to a rousing applause – well deserved lads.

The boys continued though. Raff showing his desire to get a well-deserved to goal by bravely challenging the Albury defence and getting winded. David Beckham halted play and signalled for Coach Paul to come onto the pitch and assist him. The Coach was “having a chat” and missed the signal, but more importantly so did the female contingent – that could have been their moment.

Raff had three further chances however it was his unselfish play at the death that put Charlie through when he could have advanced himself. Charlie had time to think but was very calm as he slotted it past the keeper with his left foot to make it 6-0.

There was hardly time for the restart and as soon as it did Tom Hardy blew up for full-time and the Vipers advance to the final.
A brilliant effort from all on the field. Both teams contested the game fairly and from the. 1st to the 60th. So often over the years we have seen games where Loxwood have not been rewarded for their endeavor – this time they were. Albury for their part were valiant and it probably is fair to say that the first two quick goals made all the difference as is often the case.

Everyone went home happy. Tessa went home in love……..

For this author it’s been a long wait for the semi-final win. Thank you very much lads. It was worth it!

Final word to Coach Paul and Harry Smith with that match ball…..

Heroics from Goldsworth deny the Vipers

Quite a journey to Woking was in no way dampened as a beautiful sunny morning greeted the lads and a very excited Vipers team (bolsted considerable by the generous Cobras) saw our long awaited return to competitive football as we met Goldsworth Sea Lions in a league game.

There was much pre-match nervousness and apprehension as the Smiths arrived on time (following the hire of O’Mara Cabs) and concerns were raised that their unusual punctuality may be a jinx. Just as concerning was the absence of our trusty goalkeeper George during the warm up however after a search party was sent out he was located prior to kick-off.

Warm-ups completed, detailed tactical words of wisdom delivered, jumpers removed and football was back in the bright sunshine!!!!

The lads started well. In particular Raff on the right with some trickery and wizardry that created early pressure and trouble for Goldsworth who seemed organised at the back in decent numbers. During this period a lot of confusion reigned as their goalkeeper fumbled a shot through his legs to for him to then dive back over the line and retrieve. The ref ruled “no goal” which in the spirit of the game and considering the error may have been fair – no VAR required.

The Vipers were creating the majority of the chances. Notable were Cody winning the ball in midfield, turning a phase in play, pushing the ball to Raff who knocked it to Jody in a 1:1 situation. Their goalkeeper was resolute to the challenge though and looked assured. Charlie looped in a long cross. That fooled everyone and just looped over the Goldsworth defence, Loxwood attack and their keeper sailing just over the bar.  Raff remained a menace on the right. and William was industrious as ever over on the left creating a nice balance to our attacking line.

Goldsworth came back into the game and were certainly quicker to the ball and retaining possession better in midfield. However, George looking assured in goal and in particular Harry J mopping up a lot of balls with simple clearances it all looked quite manageable. Harry Smith came on for Willem – it was warm out there and after such a long lockdown break this would be a game that would require multiple changes to allow for some rest bite.

A Goldsworth free kick was awarded from quite some distance (mid-way to the halfway line) and with the guys probably not set-up as well as Coach Paul would have wanted the Goldsworth lad chanced his arm and looped a long free kick straight over the entire defence, over George and into the top right-hand corner. There really was nothing that could be done about this beautiful shot (I think it was a shot) and you just need to pick yourself up and move on - well that. was the rallying cry anyway! 20 mins gone, 1-0 Goldsworth.

The lads were in no way out of this and to be honest on the balance of play you would have expected that the Vipers would be able to play themselves back into it. However, just a minute later and some extremely uncharacteristic play from two of our most reliable players over the years handed a 2-0 lead to Goldsworth. Harry J hit a hard pass back to George who at that speed couldn’t control it properly and blasted it directly into the path of a Goldsworth player pressing. There was still work to do but with George off his line now the Goldsworth player hit it first time chipping George who was stranded. A very nice piece of skill. Deflation. Two goals needed.

With their tails up Goldsworth came back into the game and in a crazy 5-minute period it truly was end to end. Jody had a further two 1:1s clear with the keeper who was was just doing enough to keep him out while George redeemed himself with some very brave keeping at the other end. Harry Smith and Willem were was causing trouble everywhere and won multiple corners but the Vipers just couldn’t seem to get someone on the end of anything with that vital touch. The 1st half ended quite flat with the scoreline at 2-0 and Paul had some work to do.
The 2nd half started, and a tactical change was made with Oscar on for William. Harry Smith moved into Williams left. wing position and started the half very bright – continually twisting and turning in the left corner and getting the ball across the face of goal.

The midfield continued to struggle to stamp their authority on the game and most chances were being created on the break. A good example of interplay as Charlie won a header, picked up by Harry and Jody just bobbling the ball wide. What did the boys need to do to score?

Charlie came off for a rest break, replaced by William and Raff was also rested. Chances continued at both ends and it did start to feel “like one of those days” – as the game was stretched Goldsworth were getting more clear chances and to be fair 3-0 did seem to be on the cards.

Notable chances for Loxwood included a stinging shot from Jody, a Jody shot flashing just wide of the post as the keeper was beaten and Harry S not being composed enough and blasting over the bar. That said, the Goldsworth keeper was having a blinder, well positioned and brave with a little bit of luck it was starting to look like his day.

The game stretched and it seemed that a 2-0 deficit was going to be a bridge too far however a consolation goal probably was deserved and after another string of chances William came closest after rounding the keeper who was ably supported by a last defender as the ball was cleared off the line. George continued to play well keeping the score to just the two goals – a strong save from their #5 in a 1:1 most noticeable. The final piece of play came from a Charlie attempt that was followed up by William and blasted over.

The game was played in a great spirit, officiated excellently by the ref who communicated throughout and gave encouragement to both sides. Well done to all involved.

The boys should be proud that they picked themselves back up and worked so hard to the final whistle. This really was a lesson on being decisive in front of goal and taking your chances.

Raffety was awarded a well-deserved man of the match on the Loxwood side. Personally, I would say certainly the most improved player in both training and practice matches pre- and post-lockdown restrictions. Well done Raff!

Last word goes to Jody and Harry J

Vipers vs Charlwood 1st                                                       (words and photos Garth O'Mara)

Picture
A bright, sunny, crisp morning greeted the Vipers and their higher league opponents Charlwood for this cup game. Nerves were in the air as the Vipers faced the 1st team Charlwood whose 2nd team had inflicted the only defeat of the season on us so far.

Thanks to Vinny “the enforcer” who stepped up to volunteer as ref and Marco for his diligent lino duties (as linesman and marking the pitch).

After a decent warm up Charlwood unveiled their usual Brazilian-esque Yellow, Blue and White kit which we have come to learn is befitting of some of their players. Everyone was ready for game time!

The game started at a furious pace, in front of an ear bursting rousing crowd who maintained their high volume (in a friendly, positive manner) throughout the game. The first real chance fell to William who slammed the outside of the post after Jody had put him through. However, it was good linkage play between the familiar #19 and #10 pairing of Charlwood that caught out the sleepy Vipers defence and created the first goal early on. 0-1 Charlwood. Was this to be a mauling was the concern pitch side?

The Vipers found their footing and the game was a lot better poised. The boys had a couple of chances – the most notable being a nice through ball from Raff resulting in Jody chipping agonisingly wide but whilst the defence looked more settled Charlwood continued to be dangerous. The defences were on top on this stage – Harry J controlled, Sam tracking well to push players out of position and at the other end Jody marshalled by a strong central defender.

Cam marshalled the midfield with strength all game but at this point showed his lighter touch with a brilliant through ball to Jody who beautifully curled it around the keeper that in any other game would be goal of the match – this match however was to have multiple choices in that area.

Whilst the midfield battle continued Charlwood managed to create a break and although there was some confusion pitch side as to whether it was offside the linesman was clear that the resulting goal wasn’t by explaining where the ball had rebounded from. Is this some form of Italian offside rule unbeknown to us English (+Scottish) simpletons or maybe we hadn’t really seen it properly? Either way it was 1-2.

Minutes later, a foul. Edge of the box. A two-man wall. The #10 in yellow stepped up. He struck it beautifully – the ball curls the wall and the keeper and strikes the far corner. It was a free-kick those famous Brazilian #10s – Ronaldo, Ronaldinho, Zico (yes the author is that old) - would have been proud of. 1-3.

“Come on boys, heads up, you should remain proud” was the cry from the crowd. Importantly it was also the cry from George! Our current “players player of the year” constantly encouraging, instructing and commanding to demonstrate why he was a worthy winner of the accolade.

The boys did remain proud. While many teams would have crumbled these lads showed heart and were still in this. The final chance of the half created by further Cam pressure, Charlie making a half attempt and Jody just pushing it wide. HT 1-3. The boys clapped off with huge encouragement.

Picture
An intensive and motivational team talk delivered and the 2nd half started incredibly positively. Although Charlwood did have the first opportunity the boys were now winning everything in the middle of the park. The defence were keeping their attack quiet with Cody, Sebby, Harry, Sam all putting in the tackles required. The next 10 minutes were all the Vipers and it was commented after the match by our opposing coach that at this point of the game only one team were in it.

The Vipers got their rewards and it was clear that the constant attacking pressing was rattling the defence of Charlwood who tried to remain resolute. A number of good clearing headers by their #14 being notable. A corner was won, William’s delivery had been good all day however this was exquisite. A fast flashing cross delivered to the near post was met with a well directed header from Charlie who made himself look Crouch-like in stature. 2-3! It was enough to make a grown man cry. In fact, there is a rumour circulating that it did make the author cry.

If there had been any doubt (and there wasn’t) that the Vipers couldn’t get back into this then there wasn’t now. With confidence up, belief there, the Vipers pressed on. Almost immediately Charlie won a penalty on the far side after a nudge in the back resulted in him falling 17 feet through the air. With the ball on the spot, for the 2nd game running, Cameron the brave stepped up to take the penalty. It had been noted after Scotland won a penalty shoot-out this week that Scotland had never missed a penalty in a shoot-out. Unfortunately, Cameron proved he was leaning towards the English side of the Ramsay family today and although struck with a lot of power it shaved just over the bar. Opportunity to pull level was lost.

The game had opened up and and the Vipers hatd he most of the clear-cut chances through this phase the game. This included a Jody chance that most days would have bought the desired result, and another Charlie header from a Fielden corner. At one point the ball looped high and Cam volleyed from an outrageous distance that went high and wide. “Cam you are not Zindane, but I love it…..” was the cry – for anyone who needs to understand that then YouTube is your friend - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4TuggkDPw6A.

Everyone was tiring and passes were getting loose. A fingertip save from George pushed the ball wide. Charlwood broke from midfield and the Vipers slowly tracked thinking the ball was going out but the #18 of our opposition showed intelligence to charge it down and keep it in, his cross flashed across the goal for a simple tap-in. 2-4. With the time remaining this was going to be too big a hill to climb against a side of this ability – but could the boys get a goal back as a 2-goal margin felt harsh?

Raffety was the player of this segment of the game. He played some intelligent and smart passing moves that provided both Jody and Charlie chances but the ball wouldn’t land well as their defence snuffed out chances and denied a clear sight of goal. Charlwood were defending in numbers and it was a good lesson to be fair.

A tired tackle from William bought another penalty in the game and George bounced on his line making himself look huge, but it was well placed and now 2-5 Charlwood. Still heads never went down, Charlie in particular pushed hard to win the ball back on the far right and placed a beautiful low-cut cross that evaded the opposing keeper but Jody and Raff couldn’t quite get out of their own way to get that one chance that was needed.

The game finished 2-5. Charlwood had taken their chances and they knew that they had been in a well-mannered, tough battle and their celebratory cheers (quite fairly) showed that. After an encouraging team talk the Vipers came off to a raucous reception and standing ovation from all. Enough said.

Any player could have had man of the match for the size of their hearts however Cam received it for the size of his contribution and desire in midfield.

It was commented by many that this performance was one of the proudest we had ever witnessed by this group. Play like that in the league and good times will prevail.

As Napoleon Hill wrote “You don’t have to fear defeat if you believe it may reveal powers that you didn’t know you possessed”

Final word to the coach….

Vipers hold on to win a thriller against resolute Albury

Vipers vs Albury                                                                           (words & photos Garth O'Mara)

Picture

An absolute thriller at Great Common today as the Vipers toiled through the variable weather conditions against a courageous and well organised Albury side to win 4-3.

Prior to the game the weather had been very poor however as warm-up completed, the wind died and it became perfect footie weather on a fast, wet surface. The opening phase was well poised with both teams working hard to string passes together. For the Vipers Harry J was notable with some lovely controlled passing out to the wings from centre back transitioning us from defending to attacking positions. As the game progressed though Albury started to make their possession more dangerous calling on George for a number of saves before they Albury broke through the LYFC defenders who were player watching, After nutmegging Sebby the Albury striker pushed the ball to the far left corner just out of Georges reach. 0-1 Albury.
Raff came on, and it made an immediate difference. In a Redknapp-esque restyling of the team Paul has moved Raff (Bale like) from his dependable left back position into a more advanced position on the left where he charges up that wing whilst providing service for Jody. A one-two between the pair flashed just past the Albury post and an added impetus was clear., Albury remained dangerous and a shot thundered against the post which would have gone in without the fingertips that George got to it.

A long kick resulted in a clear handball, Viper free-kick. From the free-kick the resulting pressure meant the keeper was beaten but an Albury player handled off the line and with no VAR required ref Colin Ramsay signaled for the penalty. Cameron converted calmly. This buoyed the Vipers and William continued the pressure immediately (which he continued throughout the game) to slot Jody through. 2-1 Vipers.

Confidence starting to lag Albury switched their keeper. The game was in a pattern and the teams were tightly matched. Cameron had a commanding performance in midfield all game. His winning of the ball and trying to turn play to transition was key. The difference however really showed when the Vipers pressured off the ball. It was pressuring by Jody on the new keeper that resulted in what was a chance of nothing into a desperate clearance. Calm and controlled Raff slotted the ball home first time from distance to make it 3-1. The defence was better organised towards the end of the half and the boys started to show some maturity by managing the game to HT. Time for the Half-time team talk sponsored by Fortnite.

Picture
The second half started quite differently with the Vipers starting to take control. Cody and Sam were having no-nonsense in defence, Max continued his form of the last week and Charlie came out of a very sleepy first half to provide a different attacking option which was demonstrated by 2 decent strikes that both troubled the Albury defence. Albury weren’t out of this and on one notable occasion Albury broke offside and Harry J was called into action a couple of times but put the ball safe in his no nonsense manner. There was also a particularly strong run on the left from their number 26 which Sylvester managed out to the corner and out of danger very smartly.

Re-enter the man of the moment… William Fielden. Will continued his relentless effort from the 1st half immediately and was covering every inch of the pitch – it was almost like two of him were out there! The linkage of Charlie, Jody, William and Raff were now showing some real danger. However, it was to be a linesman decision that turned the pressure back on the Vipers. Unfortunately, it was our linesman! Marco (Stevie Wonder) Vettese signalled for an Albury penalty for a foul just inside the box which they converted to make it 3-2. That’s Vitesse losing his bonus this week for sure! (Note:if anyone from Albury is reading it may have been a penalty and this maybe tongue in cheek!)

Albury were buoyed, the crowd volume increased, the Albury linesman waved his flag for offside…. Then the Albury linesman waved his flag for offside…. Then the Albury linesman waved his flag for offside…. Then the Albury linesman waved his flag for offside…

Anyway, on the 15th attempt Jody beat the offside trap (whether he was in his own half or not) as Charlie slotted through a beautifully placed ball that he ran onto and in Jody style there was only going to be one result. 4-2 Loxwood.

A 3rd GK for Albury who still remained resolute. The heads never went down and they remained a dangerous prospect throughout. It required some strong Sam and William defending to keep them out and with William covering the ball a shot just flashed wide. The Vipers had 2 quick corners, the first beautifully weighted by William (commented on by the opposing fans) that Charlie met beautifully to header just over the bar. However it was short corner well worked from the Albury side where they managed to sneak the ball in the far post from the right to make it 4-3. The Albury crowd were now rallied, and the excitement grew (in a respectful way!) as the game was coming to a climax.

Max made a couple of vital clearances and it was end to end. Notable was a long-range chip from Jody over a keeper that was miles out of his area to see it bounce just wide. The boys saw the game out and I think most were relieved to hear the final whistle for a fair, well fought and entertaining game come to close.

There were many notable performances and to be honest the author doesn’t always give his open opinion, but William Fielden should be called out specifically for covering every single inch of that pitch and battling throughout. Additionally, the physical presence from Cam makes a huge difference (literally) in that midfield area. The players gave the award to Raff who as I have commented also had an excellent and to be fair – he is the poster boy of the team J

Last word this week goes to Sam and Will (with a special photobomb appearance from George!)... Come on you PIES……..

Dorking vs Loxwood Vipers U12s                                            Jeremy Garbett (photos Steve Smith)

Match report.
Players: George, Max, Harry, Sebby, Cody, Cam, William, Jody and Charlie - no reserves

A bright, sunny morning. Early autumn leaves whispering across the car park as the Vipers tumble out of their cars and walk towards the Dorking stadium complex. Where are we playing?....we ask each other as we trudge towards the outside pitches…wait….a text message flashes in…stop…well, we are not playing on the grass pitches outside - we are playing in the stadium…yes, a proper professional stadium , yes the Stadium of Light! (well, very sunny at least…)

Hearts beating faster our players assemble on the astro…the Loxwood fans move into the sunny side of the pitch…coffees and baps are bought from the (professional) stadium café…Coach Paul (aka ‘Hairdryer’) takes the team into pre match training and practice shooting. Our lads are looking really confident, plenty of chat from them as they warm up...the fans too relax in our own way, each of us thinking big time as we gaze around the stadium in wonder. The astro pitch…perfectly formed, perfectly groomed…(in fact, just like Vinnie on a Sat night….)  however, could the Vipers compete at this heady level, we ask ourselves?

Picture
1 H
Captain Cam leads us off. Dorkinians wearing a jazzy green and yellow outfit….Vipers in classic England white. First 5 mins bodes well. Vipers playing mostly in Dorks half - we are looking promising with a really confident and aggressive start. Dorks GK fumbles a touch on a couple of corners  …mmm….is this our opportunity, is this a weak link? Yes! is the answer as a smart interchange between Charlie, Jody and then to Cody…who powers on to score with a low drive into the left hand corner…0-1. C’mon! - what a start at 6 mins in. ‘Hairdryer’ turns to fans with a big grin  - he’s ‘lovin’ it’…and so are we.

More Viper pressure as our defence actually passes to our midfield…who then slips it to our forward line…who then actually pass to EACH OTHER…and yes!...another score 0-2. Charlie finding space, weaving around and then almost a speculative drive… and through their GK legs…poor chap, he is having a mare.  At 8 mins in, Vipers now thoroughly believe. Wave after wave of accurate Viper passing, firm tackling back and running into space from the Vipers defence and midfield…and then our incessant forward movement causes mayhem in the Dorks defence.  They cannot cope as we pile on pressure and the corners. They are actually a decent side with a big forward line….but we are too focused, too driven and too good on the day. Any occasional foray by them down our flanks is magnificently repulsed, mainly by Max on the left who is having a blinder. Great to see & hear too our defensive line talking to each other, working together and then keeping the play firmly in Dorks half. Wonderful stuff. George - mostly inactive is then called on to save a marauding and lone Dorks attack - he flings himself to his left and palms it round the post…phew!…frankly, every Viper is doing their bit. Cam, patrolling the midfield dribbles, checks and then shoots confidently from 30 metres…just over. Charlie confidently and expertly does exactly the same too. Harry, Max and Sebby - all working well together are snuffing out calmly any Dorks attack, Cody, playing powerfully, tracks back to help when required, William, seizing on any midfield loose ball surges towards the Dorks last third with mazy runs, Jody afterburners on, scaring their defence time after time as he accelerates towards their keeper….it’s fabulous stuff. Another goal too …its 0-3. Halftime beckons. What a half…but can we keep it going?

2H
Oh yes we can!... is the answer. Vipers are focused and ready to engage. Jody is on fire as he adds another goal too in quick succession. 0-4. Our passing is slick, our mood is determined, Dorks backpedalling everywhere, more goals come along, Charlie strikes from 29.5 meters….their GK leaps like a home loving salmon on the Tweed….but in vain as the ball arcs over his despairing fingers and into the top left…its now 0-6. Viper fans are in another world. Yours truly cannot keep up the scribbling as William then scores a wonderful goal at speed angling it across the GK…0-7. Charlie, head up, strokes in a majestic shot…the GK only get fingertips again as it thuds in…0-8. But …but…what’s this? a rare Dorks surge towards our goal…a too nonchalant & mistimed tackle by our defence and they are in, a rebound off Georgewho couldn’t do anything about it and they score. Its 1-8. It’s a salutary wakeup call - ‘Hairdryer’ stalking the touchline calls it out….and is heard back at Ifold as he does so. Dorks emboldened, now begin to surge towards our goal but our midfield are now awake and respond - they stop the attacks and pass calmly to the forward line…Charlie scores and Jody again as well. Whistle then goes. Its 1-10. 1-10. Let it sink in.

A truly electric performance. In years to come as we bounce our grandchildren on our knobbly knees we will rasp…”I ‘woz there when we did the Dorks 10-1”

What a match. Take a bow everybody - thank you coaches too as that typical cold & rainy mid-week training is all paying off for sure. C’mon Vipers!

Final word to our debutant Max.....
