Woking vs Loxwood Vipers

30/11/2019

Garth O'Mara

19 Mins: Charlie finally listens to the advice that he has been given for weeks from Coach Paul and Dad (in the car repeatedly) and rather than trying to play FIFA20 live he intelligently knocks it into space from midfield. Jody runs into the space and although he has quite a lot of time to think he keeps his calm and beautifully slots in past the Woking keeping just inside the left-hand post. 0-1 to Loxwood

15 Mins+6 (so 21 Mins but still in the 1st quarter): Woking Goal 1-1

29 Mins: Woking Goal 2-1

Half-time: Woking 2 Loxwood 1

31 Mins: Woking Goal 3-1

37 Mins: Woking Goal 4-1

38 Mins: Straight from going 4-1 down the boys kick-off and show that their heads are not down and real intent to get back in this game. The score is flattering at this point. William gets his foot on top of the ball in midfield and delicately controls it through to Jody, a lovely pass! Jody again keeps his composure and provides their keeper no chance as he slots it home for 4-2. Is the comeback on?

42 Mins: Woking Goal 5-2

53 Mins: Woking Goal 6-2

59 Mins: Woking Goal 7-2

Full-time: Woking 7 Loxwood 2

Impressive Cobras let the Sharks off the hook!

The Cobras tour bus continued it’s travels and next stop was Elstead, the travel weary Cobras and their supporters had an early KO, which proved a challenge for all concerned. With KO looming and only eight Cobras in attendance a shuffle of the pack was looking likely. Attacking options were up for certainly up for grabs !

The Cobras were missing their influential leader Willem but welcomed back defensive rock Kelsey with Ben G and Archie to anchor the midfield. Young Barney was tasked with ‘guardian of the gloves’. The message from the coach considering the lack of numbers was straight forward... ‘keep possession and pick the simple pass’  With numbers still short at KO, Angus, still nursing a sore ‘Darren Andertonesque’ hamstring was thrown into the action in the unaccustomed position of ‘lone’ striker, now this could be interesting !

To throw another spanner in the works it was to be a ‘silent weekend’. How was this going to go with Coach and supporters desperate to show their support for the brave eight? With the referee keen to enforce the ‘silence’ and another referee monitor on the side lines to reprimand any wrong doers, both Marcus T and Liam began to sweat…..no vocal encouragement allowed - just ‘positive’ clapping.

The game got underway and the home side tried to assert their numbers advantage, but the Cobras stood firm with Marco impressing early on with his pace and reading of the game. Thankfully Cobras reinforcements started to arrive, with Archie slotting into the midfield alongside Ben. With parity restored the Cobras started to get themselves into the game with Sylvester impressing down the wing and Luc unlucky not to open the scoring with a well struck effort. Archie and Ben calm and assured on the ball dominated the midfield battles, frequently releasing Angus into space down the wide areas who was unlucky with another cross shot, just firing wide. Elstead struggled to maintain any consistent pressure on the Cobras goal, but when they did manage a strike on goal Barney dealt with everything admirably.

Back to their full compliment of players on and off the pitch a change was made to give Angus a rest with next week in mind to avoid any further injury. The ever improving Dan made an instant impression up front with some excellent hold up play and link up. Archie too proving a constant threat with his confidence growing and positive running into dangerous areas he was unlucky not to finish off a fine solo run into the Sharks penalty area. Finally the Cobras were able to make their pressure pay and a Ben G ‘thunderbolt’ strike from halfway in the opponents half proving too good for the despairing dive of their keeper, with the ball rising high into the back of the net.  1-0 Cobras, Wow ! well deserved. Some change in Elstead personnel not long before half time brought instant dividends with an excellent move from inside their own half finished off in style past a faultless Barney. 1-1.

The half time whistle came and with scores level, both teams coaches (and supporters) were finally able to get a few things ‘off their chests’, although the assured first half Cobras performance meant no ‘hair dryer’ required this time around. Keep doing the simple things.  ‘Birthday Boy’ Chris was restored to the attack for the second half, keen to continue his impressive performances from previous weeks.

Picture

The second half got back underway, with no half time ‘talkings too’ for either coach or sets of supporters from the ref or pitch side monitor, phew. At this point the weather took a turn and the heavens started to open and the pitch started to cut up further . The Cobras continued their confident display with neat passing. Dan and Archie combining well together to allow Archie space to burst into the opponents penalty area only for a moment’s hesitation to allow the desperate defenders time to avert the danger and scramble it away. A moment of midfield ‘ping pong’ due to the worsening conditions then led to the ball breaking to Archie who only had one thing on his mind....skipping past one challenge....then a second...still going....evading a last ditch defensive lunge and calmly slid the ball past the helpless keeper 2-1 Cobras. A wonderful goal !

With time ticking the Sharks pressed but some excellent defending from Fin and Barney kept them at bay. A couple of further chances came the Cobras way but the killer finishing touch was all that was missing when it mattered, sometimes a case of 'over doing things'. Cobras really should have had the game won, however some old Cobras bad habits resurfaced just when it mattered, players caught out of position and some ball watching from the half way line left the defensive line exposed and the Sharks grabbed a late equaliser.

Full time whistle 2-2, on the whole an excellent team performance with some nice passing football. A performance that deserved a win but not to be.

Well done to Archie and Ben for their excellent efforts and awards on the day.

Weather permitting a home game next week.

Well done you Cobras !

1st Half Onslow performance catches Vipers cold

23/11/2019

The Vipers returned back to the hallowed ground of Great Common on a warm but extremely damp and wet late November morning. New paint was delivered and what needs calling out was the team effort from all around us. Marco re-painted the pitch with assistance, goals were moved, Steve was meticulous in unwrapping rope at pains (it took almost as long as it takes to build a new stadium in Tottenham High Road) and then the marking out our respect line. Marco took linesman role and Vinny “the enforcer” Jenkinson took up the referee position.

The scribe of this report had lost his pen in goal movement activity. But have no fear, Brian Smith had a pen. This was a lucky pen! This was our day!!!!

1st Half
The game kicked off against Onslow on time after a thorough talking to to both captains by the Enforcer. William started very lively with a decent interception and Raff was composed and strong at left back (something he showed throughout). Onslow won a corner very quickly and this was expertly delivered and deflected towards goal, it bounced off a Loxwood head and 0-1 it was with only 2 mins gone.

Loxwood remained unfazed and Sam and Oscar showed some sensible containing defensive play. The first Loxwood chance came to Jody who industrious effort led to the ball flashing across the goal.

The game ebbed and flowed. Harry J was clearing solidly from defence however Onslow maintained pressure and a second corner hit the post. Sam sprinted up the left-hand side and it was surmised that the accuracy of the touchline straightness had provided him another 6 feet in width from halfway line to the corner post!!

Onslow won a 3rd corner and at this point George tipped it onto the post, it bounced around like a pinball and the Vipers got lucky. Onslow were shooting on sight (watch and learn Vipers) and a ball recovered by George was slippery and he couldn’t hold, the rebound resulted in a second goal (0-2) at 13 mins. These corners and the obvious practice that Onslow have put into them was showing.

At the other end of the pitch Charlie went through the middle and although it looked like he was upended it was a fair challenge by the Onslow central defender. He picked himself up and continued to press. Cody was now on in a left back position, there was an outcry from the crowd as he used his right foot – this wasn’t thought possible. Raff played to Jody and he was through but his knock-on ball was a touch too heavy.

The 19th minute may have been pivatol. Our linesman was caught 17 Gatwick runways away down in the bottom corner by the post as Onslow broke. They were only 16 feet offside as they took advantage to make it 0-3. The “Enforcer” wasn’t having it as the crowd protested. Marco had not raised his flag over in Croydon (or wherever he was) and therefore the goal stood!

At this point confidence was down. Onslow onslaught, we couldn’t clear lines, lost shape and their number 10 had nice, neat touches everywhere. A rare break saw Jody unsupported although as he managed a long attempt in from the right. Then a disastrous 2 mins….. A mishandled long shot was a lesson to all. Two players from Onslow followed up. 0-4 in the 26th min (watch and learn Vipers). Shortly after the kick-off Onslow charged again and Sam didn’t put his foot in, a shot over the keeper makes it 0-5, 27th min.

Jody finished the half with good endeavor.  A simple ball from Charlie allowed Jody and he beat the keeper but was a little wide and it flashed past the post. End of half…. A mountain to climb….. hairdryer from Coach Paul inbound in what was a sloppy half.

2nd Half
So 0-5 down after 30 mins, how is this going to end? Why would you even go back out on the field? Because we are Loxwood, because we are Vipers! Because we have pride….

The 2nd half started brilliantly. Charlie actually decided he wasn’t playing FIFA19 live on the field and started knocking the ball past players rather than dribbling. As Coach Paul pointed out “guess what? That is easier….” The balls were being played into channels and shots were being unleashed from distance. Guess what? That causes confusion! Especially when the ball/ground is slippery, and you follow it up. Using this tactic a long shot went in and Harry Smith converted. Joy all around. Hang about…….. Hang about…… Hang about…….. 17 minutes later a decision comes from Stockley Park, their linesman flags it offside and Enforcer goes with the decision. Argh!

Undeterred the Smith brothers were strong on the right, Charlie crunched their keeper, George made a good save from the right, William was stella in defence stopping Onslow having another very dangerous corner.  Jody was back on for Charlie who was getting frustrated and Sam came on for Oscar who was losing his way.

Sam made an immediate difference and carried on his good hard work from the 1st half by driving the ball forward and causing issues between midfield and attack. The boys continued to play the ball rather than running with and were finding success – in particular Raff through to Jody a few times.

Cody found his positioning and had a couple of strong tackles. Dads advice of trusting his central defenders to do their job and hold position was sound advice.  13 minutes into the half and no advancement on the score and Loxwood had probably had the better of the play. Onslow then show their ruthlessness again. A Loxwood defender is drifted past who backs off and a thundering shot that hits the post and an Onslow player follows it in to score the rebound (Vipers take note again). 0-6, 43 mins.

What we can never be beaten on is spirit. I would welcome comment on this piece, but I believe that last 10 mins passage of play was probably the best and most sublime I have seen from the Vipers in a long time. A passion for switching play, one to one passing, understanding where others were on the field, knocking balls into space and chasing it. As Steve Smith stated after the game “you can’t run faster than a well passed ball”. The voices are missing but the talent is there, the effort cannot be doubted.

Special mention for William for the Vipers goal. A long looping chip from the right-hand side of the pitch (think Matthew Le Tissier-esque) which chipped the keeper who was left in no mans land. It was a contender for man of the match (I wouldn’t take anything away from Onslow). this made it 1-6. The final score.

It wasn’t without danger; George continued to be a mountain in goal and his enthusiasm and effort was an example to all. Rightly so, he won Player of the Day from coach Paul - for the 2nd week running!

A tough result in the end, sure Onslow deserved the win on that first half performance. Loxwood dominated the 2nd half for a while and it was joy to behold. The vision is there. No need to call Poch yet!

Quote of the day from Charlie at full-time “I wanted to throw my shirt to someone in the crowd at the end of the game but they all went home at half-time”

Oh, and f**k that lucky pen, what was the point in that?

A brilliant interview from Cody below……

U11  Cobras caught cold by quick fire Chid!

18/11/2019

The Cobras continued their away travels on Saturday, this time travelling to the leafy surroundings of Witley to face Chiddingfold. A dry morning after the previous evenings deluge of rain welcomed the Cobras with the Coach quickly realising his mistake by not packing the ‘mountaineering’ ropes and harnesses they would need to deal with the slope on the pitch. This was definitely going to be a ‘game of two halves’.

A much changed Cobras welcomed back Archie and also Sam & Barney to the ranks. The Cobras still missing Kelsey ‘The Rock’ Covey, Midfield ‘General’ Ben G and Angus ‘Bite your legs’ Leete lined up with  Captain Willem proving his leadership qualities by standing in again admirably at the heart of the defence.  The game kicked off with Chid going for the throat from the very first touch, within the blink of an eye the ball was passed through the Cobras defensive ranks and bang 1-0 Chid, less than ten seconds gone ! Those still taking their seats in the stands had missed the early action already.

It looked like it could be a very tough morning, a big strong and physical Chid side dominated and used the slope to their advantage with their key player, number 4 pulling the strings and shooting from range at every opportunity. Chris proved his worth using every part of his body to keep the score line down. The Cobras defensive and midfield  lines battled hard but could just not clear their lines convincingly with passes going astray and Chid immediately back on the offensive. Goals 2, 3 & 4 soon followed. Credit to the boys they still battled hard with Willem laying his body of the line on numerous occasions to keep the score down. A further Chid goal was correctly disallowed, however goal number 5 soon followed. Sam still working tirelessly in midfield showed some lovely touches and surging forward runs to try and relieve the pressure on the Cobras back line, however any breaks into the opposition half were thwarted by the ‘enthusiastic’ opposition linesman. Half time came much to the relief to all the Cobras and their supporters.

The Cobras re-entered the arena with fresh purpose and vigour hoping the slope would now prove pivotal in changing the direction of the game. Chris now tasked with leading the line up front, a four man midfield in place  and young Barney now ‘between the sticks’, could the Cobras reduce the deficit?

Immediately the re-start got underway the Cobras set about reducing the deficit. Dan, Luc, Sam and Archie all seeing more of the ball of in dangerous areas, tackles were being won, passes completed successfully, this was more like it. Sam continued the excellent energy he had shown in the first half  and the early ball to lone striker Chris was proving successful . Some good build up work found Sam free in the box and he calmly slotted the ball past the Chid keeper. Despite the challenge of the slope Chid still posed a regular threat going forward, breaking with pace. Fin and Marco bravely continued to foil the lightening counter attacks, and Barney proving a revelation in goal with excellent saves from close range  and also at his near post. It was however just a matter of time before Chid added another goal to make it 6-1.

Undeterred Archie and Sam continued to work hard in midfield and look to release Chris ‘down the slope’, the Cobras were also getting forward in numbers and on separate occasions both Dan and Archie just unable to add the finishing touch to some excellent work from Luc and Sam. The Cobras in the ascendency continued to press and Sam broke free from the half way line beating a couple of players surged towards the penalty area and with a defender breathing down his neck he released an unstoppable cross shot from the edge of the box which found its way into the net, an excellent individual goal ! 6-2.

Some fresh legs brought Chid some renewed attacking purpose and numerous chances came their way with goal mouth scrambles and brave goalkeeping by Barney. Willem bravely clearing the danger on numerous occasions, however Chid were not to be denied a 7th goal, which was hard on the Cobras and Barney in goal, who had excelled on his Cobras debut.

Final score 7-2 Chiddingfold, a tough morning for the Cobras, however they showed great heart and determination in the 2nd half against a good Chiddingfold side who deserved their win. Well done to Sam and Willem for their awards on the day, thoroughly deserved.

We go again next week at Elstead.

A real tough morning for the depleted Vipers

A crisp sunny morning met the 8 Vipers who made the Baku-esque journey to the remote outskirts of Gatwick. The ground was very underfoot was heavy and the players started to work out in the grass that on Harry S and William was almost waist height. Both of these items would influence the game but not as much as the Vipers being a man down against a physically strong and well-equipped Charlwood side who played with their full compliment.

The Loxwood army, all 5.5 of us if you include Coach Paul and Emily Smith, lined up along the side in expectation. At this point John was pulled aside for linesman duty which seemed a sensible decision for a sensible chap until Paul started to explain to him what side and half of the pitch he needed to run and also how the offside rule works!!

The game started strongly and brightly for the Vipers. Raff was assured in the middle of defence, Williams work rate was good and he looked like his old self again.  Both Charlie and Harry were troubling the Charlwood defence and goalkeeper with long range attempts as well as very decent pressing. In amongst all of this a warning shot was fired (literally) as George in goal repelled their dangerous #99 from the left wing.

A Charlwood corner bought a wicked shot which George bravely repelled with his face, Harry continued to be a menace and Sebby cleared a corner intelligently. From that corner Oscar head the ball clear and although it was obvious the numbers were making this an uphill battle the boys were holding their own.

A good cross from Charlie who continued to work industriously was just missed by an inbound Harry in the middle. Harry had a 1:1 and William supporting from midfield also had an effort denied. Oscar had another chance and Sam just missed the deflection. At this point Loxwood had definitely had the better of the chances. It was however at this point that the tide changed.

Charlwood found new life and had a multitude of chances in quick sucession. #15 went 1:1 and George saved with his feet, #21 had a shot just over, #99 again was 1:1 against George who very bravely dived at his feet.

Finally, it was a corner which undid the lads. Viciously flicked in and using the pace it was simply deflected into the corner in the 18th minute. A neat goal. Could the boys (now getting tired after all the effort) get to at least half-time at just 1-0 to re-group?

Unfortunately not… and was has become a feature some quick fire goals were conceded. Only two minutes later the useful #99 score from close range – there had however already been two chances between the two goals.

The Vipers continued to try and face the deficit. The sun had gone in and it had turned cold. The cold breeze reflecting the mood. At 23 mins #99 pushed it across the goal for the #14 to skillfully backheel into the net.

The dispirited Vipers did muster another chance as their keeper nearly made a crucial error as the ball bobbed between his legs and Harry hunted it down to win a corner. Unfortunately William had turned into Christian Erikson and was unable to deliver with his normal quality as the ball hit the first defender.

Two more chances right at the end of the half very quickly together and the last kick of the half enabled the #14 to score another after rounding George who really did not deserve to be 4-0 down at this point.

Paul was incredibly sympathetic in his half-time talk. The boys had worked hard and the conditions and outnumbering was not helping them at all.

The second half started as the first half ended. Dominant pressure from Charlwood. A goal was scored right at the start of the half by number #17 to make it 5-0 and put the game out of reach for certain. The question now was “how many will this be?”. They hit the post two further times before Loxwood had their first attack however with tiring legs Sebby and Oscar were struggling with positioning and being caught offside was a consistent theme of the half. Sam and William were now struggling with the pace and shape and positioning was started to become disjointed in multiple areas.

The boys became guilty of not knocking the ball into space but instead trying to dribble around everyone. This had their tired legs caught no matter what flashes of skill they demonstrated. “Triangles and Knocking the ball into space” was the cry from the coach and supporters.

At some point in the half their keeper resorted to wearing a jumper. Which was indicative of how this game was going.

At 38 mins a planned goalkeeping change occurred which had been pre-agreed on Georges instruction once he had decided he had enough. And quite frankly, I don’t blame him. Although William put his hand up with the physical power of this side through the middle it seemed more sensible to put Charlie in goal who hadn’t played this position for some time. What a revelation.! I could write another 3 pages on the number of one to one saves, diving saves and tips around the post that he made – my book actually says “I have lost count”. The opposing fans applauded and shouted their approval. I couldn’t be prouder!!!

This really had turned into shooting practice and in the end he was only undone by a deflection in the 55th minute off a defenders head. 6-0.
Everything was against us now. Our own linesman (to the hilarity of the Charlwood fans) missed an offside against us and even the Vulture looking birds in the trees were ominous. Throughout the boys toiled. They had multiple attempts in spots, George adapted to midfield well and Raff remained composed. The final 5-minutes were a flurry. A Loxwood corner! A free kick the other way. Two more Charlwood chances denied!! The Smiths offside.

George and Charlie jointly won the player of the day. It’s almost perverse for the two keepers to pick up this award in a 6-0 defeat but their heroics at times kept the score down to what could have easily been doubled. Video interview below..

I am in danger of repeating myself, but everything was against the boys today. 9vs8, the heavy pitch with long grass, jet lag from the journey.

Personally I am very proud of the attitude. This will turn around. BELIEVE!!!!!!

Keeper Chris proves he's an all round star performer! (Andy Leete)

Picture
Saturday morning finally arrived and after a frantic week of who's in and who's out  the Cobras arrived to face Albury with the manager hoping he had enough to go ahead. The Cobras welcomed Sylvester to their ranks to help bolster the midfield. A re-shuffle was required along the back line, with Captain Willem answering the SOS call to lead the back line in the absence of the missing Kelsey. With nine players all accounted for and the opposition having a squad double the size it was going to be a 'big ask' for the young Cobras.

Albury started the game on the front foot with their strongest performers causing problems from the off, neat interplay, strong down the flanks, if was 'all hands to the pumps' at the back for the Cobras, Angus and Fin coming to the rescue on numerous occasions and Chris producing some great saves to keep the scores level. With only ten minutes gone things got more difficult with the Cobras with Angus 'tweaking' a hamstring and despite bravely trying to continue a rest was required. With no subs at their disposal, a quick 'deal' was struck with the Albury manager to use one of their numerous subs. The game recommenced and Albury continued to press for the opening goal, shortly after some respite for the backline came with some good work from Dan holding the ball up well and combining with the Smith Boys to somehow find Oscar in space in the final third. Still with plenty to do  but cool as a cucumber Oscar finished with ease past the oncoming keeper. 1-0 Cobras !  A stunned silence fell around the ground from both sets of supporters not quite believing what happened as this came totally against the run of play. A brilliant counter-attack.

This stirred Albury into making further changes and seemed to have the desired affect as the equaliser came soon after. The rest of the half saw chances at both ends with Oscar going close with an audacious chip and Harry also denied by the keeper. At the other end Willem proved a calm head in the storm with timely interceptions and perfectly organising of his defensive unit. Half time came and time to catch breath after a tense and nerve jangling first half.

A further half time deal was struck between the two managers to give Albury's goalkeepers some extra practice by going in goal for the Cobras. This enabled a change in formation with four now in midfield, semi 'parking the Cobras bus' but allowing Chris to raid down the right hand side. The second half saw Sylvester grow in confidence and become more involved, showing some neat touches. The game was more even with chances at both ends, the plan for Chris to exploit the right hand side was starting to pay dividends, time and time again Chris was using his pace and trickery to get forward on the counter and to involve the ever industrious Harry and Oscar. The Cobras were exerting more pressure and forced several corners, for this pressure Harry showed some lovely individual skills to beat a couple of defenders and hammer it past the Albury keeper, 2-1 Cobras !

Further Albury changes swung the game back in their favour and only some lovely saves from the 'on loan' keeper and some great defending from Fin and Marco kept the lead in tact.More pressure found the Cobras facing yet another corner and failure to clear their lines enabled Albury to scramble home an equaliser to make it 2-2.

Cobras heads could have quickly dropped but quite the opposite, desperate defending and some tenacious tackling showed that the game was very much in the balance. Some great midfield work from both Dan and Sylvester enabled the trio of Chris, Oscar and Harry to pass their way through the Albury midfield and defence, with at least five or six passes exchanged Chris found himself sprinting free on the edge of the penalty area and his fierce cross shot deflected in past the keeper off the retreating last defender, 3-2 Cobras ! Now with their tails up the Cobras pressed forward sensing a fourth goal, more excellent work down the right and a inch perfect cross picked out an oncoming Sylvester at the back post who blasted a fierce rising shot into the net 4-2 Cobras ! The away fans were in dreamland.

The last couple of minutes were tense with the Cobras still defending hard and never giving up. The ref blew the final whistle much to the relief of the ecstatic away terrace.

Quite simply and fantastic team effort by all against a very difficult Albury team. Chris and Fin were both rewarded for their excellent performances with the weekly awards, although it could have been any number of players this week.

Come on you Cobras !

Vipers best performance of the year but no corner turned

1st Half (Garth)

A crisp, dew drenched, frosty scene at Great Common met the Vipers as they faced their first ever game against our visitors of the morning Charlwood (CW) who herald from errr.. Charlwood I guess? A quick Google search informs me it is out by Gatwick.

The guest referee Vincent “Colina” Jenkinson arranged the two teams in the centre circle for a perfectly observed minutes silence (except of course for Tessa who didn’t notice or stop nattering!)

CW dressed in the famous yellow shirts, blue shorts and white socks so the scene was set for Brazil vs Fulham. Colina got the game underway and the Vipers started very strongly. Immediately apparent was the quality of the CW #5 in central defence who good positioning and well-timed tackling broke down initial attacks. This was a feature throughout the game.

Harry J was quickly called into action in goal and kept out CWs very useful #19. Jody was lively upfront and broke through into a 1-on-1 as the keeper came out his shot lifted just over the bar. Sam and Barney interchanged a couple of times during the 1st half and worked tirelessly in the middle of the park.

A sweeping move through the middle of the field when Sam passed intelligently to Cody and a beautiful long pass again found Jody whose left foot shot went just left of the post. One highlight which almost had his Dad in tears was Charlie performing a beautiful Cryuff turn.

The first CW goal came somewhat against the run of the play but a loose ball was picked up and a very good chip placed it into the top corner for 0-1. The boys were unsettled and almost immediately CW scored again – their useful #19 delivering the goods. This could get out of control!!!

The boys were continually a threat upfront. They demonstrated good knowledge of the offside rule and then potentially the key turning point of the game occurred as Jody was bought down in the penalty area. Who would take the 200% nailed on penalty kick? What do you mean Vinny “Stevie Wonder” Jenkinson hasn’t given it? “VAR, VAR. VAR……..” came the chant on the terraces.

The Vipers continued to attack with Cam just going wide but the half ended with a lovely CW goal as the Viper midfield were dispossessed the attacker walked around a few players to slip it into the net for 0-3. Time for a coach talking and some rousing words from Paul!

2nd Half (Jeremy)

Prologue
It was rather tense. It was rather frustrating too. The swirling post-Halloween fog had now almost evaporated by half time leaving wisps hovering around the fringes of the pitch. The weather conditions right now felt just like Vipers pre-match expectations of strong belief and hope -  now all rather (unfairly) subdued and diffused. Vipers so close to scoring on countless occasions in that first 30 – highly competitive all over the pitch...yet...yet...weirdly now 3 goals down. Two goals needlessly given away by Vipers, both forays by CW as soft as the softest Cornish butter in the noon day sun but the third was a wonder goal by CW – a mazy run past x4 defenders and then buried skilfully in the corner...rightfully, a thing of beauty to admire.

However, Vipers, now downhill, started strongly right from the off. Within 48 secs Jody and Charlie skillfully interplayed and was pressurising the startled CW defence. Jody surged through and his powerful shot cannoned off a hapless CW defender into the net. Oh yes! Hope reborn indeed, its 1-3. The home crowd surged hard against the respect rope but luckily it held. Our noble coach Paul ‘hairdryer’ Fielden voice went up an easy octave. ”C’mon Loxwood ...BELIEVE!!’ We did. The team did too as they skipped back. Game on.

But what’s this? Our defence, in their man marking, mysteriously crumbled away within 2 mins of our goal. CW forced a decent save from Sebby, low down to his left & out it went for a corner. CW whipped in the corner but only half cleared by Vipers but then CW calmly passed it back into the box to find x2 (!) unmarked CW forwards, one of which calmly tapped in from close range. 1-4. Rats!

CW applied pressure again, their defence and midfield was rather striking in their composure on the ball – playing a simple game of short triangles up the wings and midfield they worked the ball well. Vipers battled well though and it was still highly competitive everywhere. Vipers in the final verdict perhaps guilty of hanging onto the ball a tad too long...and perhaps too pushed off the ball a bit too easily too. As Olivia NJ sweetly said a long time ago....’let’s get physical’ (too).

The ball was zinging back and forth up and down the pitch...in-swinging high and fast corners from CW exposing our defence protocol...more simple & effective interplay too from CW.... but then Jody popping through (again) and powering a shot against the bar....William surging through on another clever run...Charlie with sublime touches on the wing...Sam and Cody both valiantly tackling with huge heart and covering alot of ground...Cam majestically striding around the midfield with choice interventions...however CW had our number. Within a purple patch of 12 mins they found a further two goals... 1-6. Vipers midfield and defence were just a bit patchy. Sebby, in goal, was having a tough ‘ole time and so wisely our coach gave him a break which released him back to the outfield – it was a good decision and crowd encouragingly roared their approval as Sebby got back into the defence saddle.

The match in its final 10 mins was again strangely and compellingly competitive despite the skewed score line. Jody was keeping their keeper very honest forcing another terrific save. But crypt kickers five they again scored rather easily...1-7 but then a thing of beauty....William retaliated.  Wonderfully. Rather like the ghost of Zola past in the wisps of the fog around he curved past x3 hapless CW defenders then calmly shot hard and accurately into the bottom left – a truly wonderful score.

So it all finally ended 2-7 to CW....but as the home crowd wended their way past security, the waiting visitors coach and inevitable press paparazzi...all present felt it was a much closer game. Yes, of course CW perhaps on balance deserved to win, maybe 4-3,  but it was another encouraging display by Vipers all over the pitch and the future looks bright...yes, almost as orange as the now out of date pumpkins littering the roads.

So onto Charlwood ‘B’ team next week. It’s away. Bring it on. Yes, lets BELIEVE.

Congratulations to Cameron "Kyle Walker" Ramsay who was awarded player of the match in part for his agreement to play in goal at the end of the game.
