A match against local rivals Chiddingfold Rockets is always an engaging affair. But this week with the bare 9 only available, everyone from the Magpies team needed to pull on their reserves of stamina, grit and determination in what was a tough away fixture. Unfortunately, the first quarter got off to a poor start with 3 quickfire goals seeing the Magpies 3-0 down. Was there anyway back from this?
Yes there was !! - under Liam's captaincy the team began to shape up with keeper Neo commanding his area and Liam marshalling a defence of tough-tackling Zach and battling Jack. As a result, the second quarter was much better ending goalless with Loxwood beginning to get on top with more passion and desire. In the third quarter, with the rain lashing down Loxwood came much more into it, with Tom battling away in midfield using Nathan and Coanan on the wings to good effect. Loxwood pushed more and more forward with Ethan holding the ball up and releasing Charlie to run clear but he just couldn't find a finish.
And then after further pressure from an increasingly confident Magpies, a great long range effort from Tom rattled the bar - unlucky!! Meanwhile, at the other end, Chiddingfold broke clear to steer home a fourth with some strong forward running despite the attentions of Liam and Zach - fair play - that was a great goal!!
In the last quarter, Chiddingfold hammered in a fifth from a corner but that didn't stop Loxwood pushing forward to at least register a deserved goal - towards the end Neo released Nathan who beat the offside trap and his goalbound effort was cleared off the line with the ball falling to Coanan, but his strike hit the inside of the post and bounced clear!! It looked like one of those days ……. And that was full time!!!
All in all a good competitive game, and the scoreline certainly didn't reflect the game pattern. Following that first quarter, there was great desire, stamina and resilience shown by everybody to bounce back.
Well done boys - it'll come !!!.
