Loxwood 2 v 1 Dorking Wanderers
Team: Paddy, Zach, Liam, Charlie D’Aoust, Nathan, Will, Tom, Neo, Hamish, Ethan, Coalan, Jack, Rowan
Scorers: Neo (2)
So this was the big one!! Following a great season and real improvements in performance week on week, the Magpies had the opportunity to finish the season with a trophy in the SSYFL Shield U12 Final.
Our opponents were Dorking Wanderers who we had played 4 times this season, and got a creditable draw with only 2 weeks ago. Could we turn the improving performances into a win and a trophy?
The conditions were to prove a big factor with a fierce wind blowing right down the pitch, and in the first half with the wind behind them, Dorking were on top, striking the bar, and then finishing another opportunity well to go in 1-0 up at half time. But would this be enough though with Loxwood having the wind behind them in the second half?
In the second half, Jack replaced Neo in goal who went up front and continued the great work in the first half from Jack and Rowan by limiting the opportunities that the classy central defenders from Dorking would have in carrying the ball out from the back.
The game then really began to open up as an end-to-end game and then midway through the half Loxwood struck after a delicious strike from Neo following a nice cross from Nathan with the ball going in off the post. Lovely!!! Loxwood continued to press with some long strikes from Tom testing the keeper.
Then at 1-1, a great chance for Dorking was brilliantly kept out by Jack. This proved to be a pivotal moment as shortly afterwards Neo chased on to a through ball and won out on a 50:50 with the keeper and just got the ball over the line after the desperate attempts from a Dorking defender to keep it out to make it 2-1. YEEESSSS !!
This meant Dorking had to chase the game, but Loxwood held firm and in fact going into the last 10 minutes looked the more likely to score with Rowan and Neo a constant menace of a strikeforce up front. …… And then after what seemed a very long last 5 minutes, the final whistle went to jubilant celebrations at the end!!
This was a rich reward for the levels of effort and commitment shown throughout the season and in particular in recent weeks and we now certainly have the momentum going into next season.
Well done boys – we are all massively proud of all of you!!!!
